Abstract. The article presents the results of an analysis of the opinions of residents of Moscow and the Moscow region about the goals of spiritual development based on the data of a specific sociological study. In the subject research field, there is also a question of identifying similarities and differences in the goal-setting system of spiritual development in men and women. It is recorded that respondents most often call the goals of spiritual development the knowledge of the inner self, the knowledge of the world, the achievement of harmony, pacification and self-improvement. Less often, respondents indicated as the goal of spiritual development the need to be human, the search for the meaning of life, the acquisition of spiritual qualities, respect for other people, love for oneself and others, cultural development. The most rarely encountered answer is material values. The differences in the goal-setting system of spiritual development in men and women are shown. So, for women, the most significant goals are the knowledge of the inner self, the knowledge of the surrounding world and the achievement of harmony, for men – the knowledge of the world, self-improvement and the knowledge of the inner self. Thus, women are more often focused on self–knowledge in their spiritual development, and men are more often focused on cognition of the world.
