THE ROLE OF CINEMA IN PRESERVING THE CLASSICAL LITERARY HERITAGE

Annotation. In modern society, with the rapid pace of modernization of the socio-cultural environment, the preservation of cultural heritage, of which classical literature is an important part, is of particular importance. Cinema is becoming one of the widest channels for broadcasting literary classics today. The purpose of the study is to analyze the film adaptations of classical literary works as a way to preserve cultural heritage and its broadcast to the masses. The novelty of the study is as follows. The content analysis of audience ratings of film adaptations of classic literary works on foreign sites IMDb and Metacritic was carried out. It was revealed that the largest number of film adaptations have positive ratings from the audience. At the same time, films of earlier release years are not inferior in the rating to modern film adaptations. It is shown that the works of Russian writers are filmed quite a lot by Western directors, from which it can be concluded that the domestic literary classics are in demand abroad. However, Russian versions of the film adaptations are less popular among viewers than foreign ones.
